Technocracy

Winston Churchill famously said that democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others. His quote feels so relatable because it speaks the necessity of democracy while expressing how our constant disappointment at the results that it delivers.

Democracy gives equal merit to the informed and the ignorant. It takes ideas filled with potential and whittles them down with compromise. Whatever progress we achieve is slow and weighed down with bureaucracy.

But what if there was another way? What if we had a political system where government positions were given out on grounds of merit, and decisions were made by experts? This is called a technocracy, from the Greek words for skill and power.

Is technocracy viable? How should it be integrated with our current democratic system? Do you think that we should give technocracy a try?
