Journalism in Crisis
Remember journalists? They were the people who were paid to report the news before Facebook was invented, and your weird Uncle Carl started posting the news for free. Although journalism does still exist, it is struggling to adapt to a world where news organizations must maintain high standards of integrity and ethics, while remaining profitable, and while competing with any YouTuber who wants to spread news, opinions, or conspiracy theories.
In the past, the news was largely curated by professionals who were trained, employed and held to standards. We have now transitioned into a world where the news is participatory - everyone gets a voice. This has democratized the media, and benefited the downtrodden and marginalized, but has also created opportunities for cranks and scam artists to invade our public conversations.
Is journalism in crisis? Does our new media technology provide benefits that outweigh the risks? How can we become better and more responsible consumers of news?
