Democracy Under Threat
Though far from perfect, and often criticized, democracy is the best system we have for maintaining functional, effective governments that protect the rights and freedoms of individuals. We all have a stake in our political system, and a responsibility to protect our democracy.
Canada and the United States were once seen as thriving examples of the benefits of democracy, but it seems that the vigor and vibrancy of our democratic institutions is fading. Here are just a few possible reasons:
- Widening wealth gap,
- Political polarization,
- Radicalization,
- Misinformation,
- Anti-intellectualism,
- Gerrymandering,
- Lobbying & corrupt campaign financing,
- Foreign interference,
- Political apathy/low voter turnout,
- Increasing barriers to political protest.
Is our democracy under threat? Is it better or worse than in the past? What should we do to protect it?
